Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 486 asked in the Legislative Council on 24 August 2017 by Hon Ken Baston

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CONTAMINATED SITES — EXMOUTH
      486. Hon KEN BASTON to the Minister for Environment:
I refer to the answer to question without notice 438 asked on 22 August regarding contaminated sites in Exmouth.
      (1) Is the former power station site mentioned in the answer to (1) still owned by a government department or agency?
(2) If yes to (1), which state government department or agency owns this site?
      (3) Who was found responsible for the contamination and subsequent remediation work at the former Exmouth power station?
(4) When were the remediation works carried out?
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) Yes.
      (2) The former power station site comprises lots 300 and 301 on deposited plan 406333. The current certificates of crown land title indicate that the primary interest holder—the owner for the purposes of the Contaminated Sites Act 2003—is the Regional Power Corporation for lot 300, and the Shire of Exmouth for lot 301.
      (3) The Contaminated Sites Committee has not been requested to make a decision about responsibility for remediation of the site under part 3 of the Contaminated Sites Act 2003.
(4) Site investigations and remediation works commenced in 2000 and are still in progress.
