Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 1111 asked in the Legislative Council on 15 November 2022 by Hon Peter Collier

Parliament: 41 Session: 1

BANKSIA HILL DETENTION CENTRE — UNIT 18 DETAINEES —SUICIDE ATTEMPTS AND SELF-HARM

1111. Hon PETER COLLIER to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Corrective Services:

(1) On what date were the juveniles from Banksia Hill Detention Centre, or BHDC, first transferred to unit 18, Casuarina Prison?

(2) Since the date referred to in (1) to today, how many juveniles have been transferred from BHDC to unit 18, Casuarina Prison?

(3) How many of the juveniles referred to in (2) have attempted self-harm or suicide since being transferred to unit 18, Casuarina Prison?

Hon MATTHEW SWINBOURN replied:

I thank the member for some notice of the question. The following information is provided to me by the Minister for Corrective Services.

(1) It was on 20 July 2022.

(2) There were 33 distinct young people.

(3) The number of distinct young people who have attempted self-harm or suicide since their first transfer to unit 18 of Casuarina Prison is in tabular form. I seek leave to have the response incorporated into Hansard.

[Leave granted for the following material to be incorporated.]

Incident Occurrence

Number of Young People

Attempted Suicide

7

Self-Harm - Serious

2

Self-Harm - Minor

18

Total (Distinct Young People)

18

N.B. The numbers in the table do not add up to the overall total – this is because some individuals involved are included in more than one self-harm / attempted suicide category.
