Question Without Notice No. 289 asked in the Legislative Council on 3 April 2019 by Hon Nick Goiran

Minister responding: Hon S.M. Ellery
Parliament: 40 Session: 1

Answered on

SCHOOLS — RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS

289. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the Minister for Education and Training:

I refer to the minister's remarks during debate on the Gender Reassignment Amendment Bill 2018 that ''Victoria adopted a particular model when it came to respectful relationships. Western Australia is not adopting the Victorian model.''

(1) Was the minister briefed on the Victorian model?

(2) If yes to (1), will the minister table the briefing documents she received?

(3) Was the minister's decision not to adopt the Victorian model recorded in writing?

(4) If yes to (3), will the minister table those documents?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1) Yes.

(2) I table the attached information.

[See paper 2554.]

(3) The premise of the question is incorrect. A decision was made to adopt a Western Australian–specific program based on feedback from the lead agency, the Department of Communities, as well as the Department of Education and the School Curriculum and Standards Authority about what was best for Western Australian schools. Concerns were incorrectly raised in the media that the model to be implemented here was the same as the Victorian model. That is not the case.

(4) Not applicable.
