Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 521 asked in the Legislative Council on 6 September 2017 by Hon Peter Collier

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

HOUSING AUTHORITY — RICON CONTRACTORS PTY LTD
      521. Hon PETER COLLIER to the minister representing the Minister for Housing:
      (1) Has the Housing Authority recently engaged Ricon Contractors Pty Ltd to undertake construction in Jigalong?
(2) Will the minister confirm that the headquarters of Ricon Contractors Pty Ltd are in Queensland?
(3) If yes to (1) and (2), why was a Western Australian company not engaged to do the work?
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the Leader of the Opposition for some notice of the question.
(1) Yes.
      (2) Yes, Ricon is a Queensland‑owned business. However, it has had a permanent operational presence in the Kimberley, at Kununurra, since 2010 and in Broome since 2016. Ricon has a state office located in Broome.
      (3) The tender submitted by Ricon Contractors Pty Ltd provides the best overall value for money from a company with a sound track record of delivering projects on time, with commitment to local and Aboriginal engagement, as demonstrated in its successful delivery of housing in remote Western Australian Aboriginal communities over the past six years.
