Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 982 asked in the Legislative Council on 22 September 2020 by Hon Rick Mazza

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CORONAVIRUS — INTERSTATE AND INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS —SPENCER FAMILY

982. Hon RICK MAZZA to the Leader of the House representing the Premier:

I refer to the open letter on page 48 of today's The West Australian titled ''My country's abandoned me'' by Stephen Spencer, a two-time Afghanistan and East Timor war veteran, stranded with his family in Abu Dhabi.

(1) Did the Premier receive correspondence from Mr Spencer in relation to his circumstances in Abu Dhabi?

(2) If yes to (1), what action has the Premier taken to facilitate the return of Mr Spencer and his family to Western Australia?

(3) What actions is the Premier taking and what submissions is he making to facilitate the return of Western Australians stranded overseas?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1)–(3) The Premier has received correspondence from Mr Spencer's family. As per previous practice, the Premier will not discuss individual cases. The state government has agreed to increase in a staged way the number of Australians returning to Western Australia by another 500 per week.
