Question
I refer to schools being designated as a 'Limited Program School' and as a result students being able to bypass their local school in preference of another school whilst claiming Assistance for Isolated Children and the Boarding Away from Home Allowance, and I ask:
(a) what schools are classified as a 'Limited Program School';
(b) what are the criteria for such as classification; and
(c) does the Department of Education in classifying a school take into consideration the impact the policy may have on remaining students and resourcing?
Answered on 10 April 2018
(a) [See Tabled Paper No.________]
(b) Under the Australian Government Department of Human Services guidelines, a limited program school is:
- a primary school where the syllabus and teaching arrangements are specifically geared to cater for the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students; or
- a school providing a secondary program that:
- does not provide adequate facilities or programs to enable a student to gain a Year 12 certificate or tertiary entrance score; or
- has a syllabus and teaching arrangements that are specifically geared to cater for the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
(c) Yes. The Department of Education considers the impact such a decision would have on a school prior to implementation.
