LOGGING —
BEEKEEPER CONCERNS
746. Hon DIANE EVERS to the minister representing the
Minister for Forestry:
I refer to the minister's response
to my question without notice 672, asked on 23 August 2018, regarding apiarists
and the Forest Products Commission's harvest planning processes prior
to logging.
(1) How many
registered apiarists have been notified about harvests planned by the FPC
through the coupe planning process over the last five years, and how were they
notified?
(2) How many
apiarists have responded to FPC's notifications of harvest through the
coupe planning process over the last five years?
(3) What issues were raised by the
apiarists who responded?
(4) How many
changes to logging operations have been undertaken as a result of the apiarists'
responses to FPC's notifications, and what were they?
Hon
ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:
I thank the member for some notice
of the question. The Minister for Forestry has provided the following
information.
(1) The Forest
Products Commission has provided notification of harvest operations to 28
registered apiarists over the last five years. This has involved 79 individual
notifications. Notification consists of a letter or email setting out the FPC's
intentions and a map of the operational area.
(2) The FPC
received three responses to the 79 notifications provided.
(3) The issues
raised in the three responses received were clarification of timing of the
operation to facilitate the movement of hives, which was raised twice, and
concern over the potential for dust to impact hives near a haul site, which was
raised once.
(4) No changes to
logging operations have been necessary as a result of any of the apiarist
responses to FPC notifications. The issues raised were able to be dealt with
during the planning of the operations.
