MEMBER ELECTORATE
ALLOWANCE — POLITICAL CANDIDATE PROMOTION
481. Hon TJORN SIBMA to the Leader of the House representing
the Premier:
I refer to government members'
utilisation of their electorate allowance.
(1) Is the
Premier aware of any state government member who has used or is using their
electorate allowance to print material that promotes a federal Labor candidate?
(2) Is the
Premier aware of any state government member who has used or is using their
electorate allowance to print material that promotes the political candidacy of
a family member?
(3) Is the
Premier aware of any state government member who has used or is using their
electorate allowance to undertake both (1) and (2)?
(4) If yes to any
or all of the above questions, which state government member has acted, or is
acting, in this way; and, how is this behaviour consistent with the standards
of openness, accountability and transparency the Premier has set?
Hon SUE
ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(4) The
Premier does not monitor individual members with respect to the way in which
they spend their electorate allowances. The Premier would expect all members to
adhere to the Salaries and Allowances Tribunal's determination around
the utilisation of electoral allowances, and would strongly encourage members
to use their electoral allowances to assist in the effective representation of
their electorate.
