Question Without Notice No. 1125 asked in the Legislative Council on 8 November 2018 by Hon Nick Goiran

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

Answered on

NATIONAL REDRESS SCHEME

1125. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the Leader of the House representing the Attorney General:

I refer to the answer provided by the Leader of the House to my question without notice on 6 November 2018 in which she informed the house of the stakeholders who had been consulted on the National Redress Scheme for Institutional Child Sexual Abuse (Commonwealth Powers) Bill 2018.

(1) Was that consultation recorded in writing?

(2) If yes, will the Leader of the House table those documents?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1) Yes.

(2) My office does not have possession of these notes. The Department of the Premier and Cabinet has not provided them as ''these consultations occurred during drafting of the bill and are subject to cabinet confidentiality''. The consultation process, which is subject to public interest immunity, allows for frank and fearless discussions and advice to government to occur. Accordingly, I am of the view that the importance of this process should be preserved.
