Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 528 asked in the Legislative Council on 6 September 2017 by Hon Colin Tincknell

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CHILDREN — SELF-HARM RATES
      528. Hon COLIN TINCKNELL to the Leader of the House representing the Minister for Child Protection:
I understand that obtaining some of this information can be difficult, but that also highlights part of the problems and weaknesses with child protection.
      (1) Does the government have any statistics on the rate of self-harm among children in Western Australia?
      (2) Does the government have any statistics on the rate of self-harm in children who have been involved in custody disputes in the Family Court of Western Australia; and, if so, what are the figures?
Hon SUE ELLERY replied:
I note that the honourable member added a preamble to the question that was submitted. I make the point that when the member puts a question on notice—gives some notice—the answer cannot address something added when the member stands up and reads it in the house. I understand the member's point of view but I cannot respond to that in an answer I am giving on behalf of another minister if the member has not submitted those words.
I advise that I had a conversation with the member behind the Chair. I was provided with an answer, but I was not satisfied with all the information in the answer, so I give him an undertaking that I will pursue an answer and, hopefully, I can give it to the member tomorrow.
Hon Nick Goiran: Tomorrow! That's favouritism.
Hon SUE ELLERY: Yes; it is.
The PRESIDENT: Hon Aaron Stonehouse, you have the call; nobody else has.
