Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 667 asked in the Legislative Council on 23 August 2018 by Hon Nick Goiran

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CHILD PROTECTION — CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE — ROEBOURNE

667. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the minister representing the Minister for Police:

I refer to the answer provided by the Minister for Child Protection to my question without notice asked on 22 August 2018 in which the house was informed that the Western Australia Police Force holds the up-to-date information on charged offenders in relation to Operation Fledermaus.

(1) How many individuals were charged under the operation?

(2) Has the Pilbara district police continued to arrest people for child sex offending in the region under their Pilbara joint response team investigation since Operation Fledermaus formally ceased on 12 March 2018?

(3) Is it correct that, as at 10 August 2018, 54 men have been arrested on more than 360 charges?

(4) If no to (3), what is the correct number either as at today's date or as at 10 August 2018?

(5) Further to (3) and (4), how many people are the alleged victims of the conduct that has resulted in the charges that have been laid?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following information has been provided to me by the Minister for Police.

(1) Since the start of Operation Fledermaus and the formation of the Pilbara joint response team, a total of 58 offenders have been charged, with 349 charges being preferred as at 23 August 2018.

(2) Yes.

(3)–(4) See (1).

(5) There are 50 victims.
