Question

With regard to the proposed logging of Barrabup Forest near Nannup, I ask -:

(a) by product and species, including wood chips, what volume of wood does the Forest Products Commission anticipate generating from the planned logging;
(b) what is the total cost of constructing new roads to enable logging to occur;
(c) what is the total cost of upgrades to existing roads and tracks to enable logging to occur;
(d) what is the total cost of construction of log landings to enable logging to occur;
(e) when was the most recent dieback survey done in Barrabup;
(f) will another dieback survey need to be done before logging can commence;
(g) what is the expected cost of the old growth forest assessment currently underway;
(h) what is the expected cost of the on-ground surveys to check for sites of cultural and/or archaeological significance in the area to be disturbed; and
(i) what is the estimated age of the trees proposed to be felled?
Answered on 12 September 2017

(a) Jarrah sawlog - 13,500 cubic metres
Jarrah other products (firewood, charlog and residue products): approximately 13,800 cubic metres
(b) $59,713 to date.
(c-d) Nil costs to date. Costs will depend on final design pending old-growth and heritage survey.
(e) 12 April 2017

(g) The assessment by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions of the potential old-growth forest status of areas within the harvest coupe is still underway, and costs have yet to be finalised.
(h) $28,613
(i) Trees of all ages will be harvested that are generally above a minimum diameter size of 20cm. Larger and older trees will be retained for habitat.
