Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 1287 asked in the Legislative Council on 12 November 2020 by Hon Peter Collier

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

SOUTH COAST HIGHWAY — UPGRADE

1287. Hon PETER COLLIER to the minister representing the Minister for Transport:

I refer to the third stage of works, which includes reconstruction and widening of South Coast Highway, and construction of two passing lanes between Bluff Creek Road and Kojaneerup West Road.

(1) Can the minister confirm the length of road that will be upgraded as part of these works?

(2) Will a section of this road be excluded from these works and not upgraded; and, if yes, how long is this section?

(2) If yes to (2), what is the reason that the whole section of South Coast Highway between Bluff Creek Road and Kojaneerup West Road is not being upgraded at the same time?

(4) Has a complete upgrade been costed; and, if so, what is the total cost of the complete upgrade of this road?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the Leader of the Opposition for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided by the Minister for Transport.

(1)–(4) A key McGowan government election commitment was to allocate $30 million as part of the first stage of upgrading the highest priority sections of South Coast Highway between Albany and Jerramungup. The first two tranches of this work involved upgrading the 2.3 kilometre Mead Road section and the 2.8 kilometre Kalgan section. The third tranche involved six kilometres of widening and reconstruction works, including two new passing lanes between Bluff Creek Road and Kojaneerup West Road. The McGowan government is investing a record amount into regional road infrastructure across the state and will continue to work to identify new project priorities.
