Question Without Notice No. 162 asked in the Legislative Council on 27 March 2018 by Hon Tim Clifford

Parliament: 40 Session: 1
Answered on 27 March 2018

      162. Hon TIM CLIFFORD to the Minister for Regional Development:
In June last year, I asked about solar projects in the goldfields region and it was stated that the Goldfields–Esperance Development Commission was working with Western Power and several industry interest groups on a feasibility study.
(1) What were those interest groups?
(2) What was the outcome of the feasibility study?
(3) What technologies or forms of renewable energy generation were included in the study?
I thank the member for the question.
      (1) The initial work was overseen by the Goldfields–Esperance Development Commission but was transferred to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, which has conducted a preliminary assessment into large-scale solar in the goldfields. In undertaking this work, DPIRD engaged with many interested parties, including the City of Kalgoorlie–Boulder and its energy focus group, the mining industry, solar energy developers, Synergy, Western Power and government agencies such as the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety; the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage; the Public Utilities Office; and the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation.
      (2) The preliminary assessment has been completed and its recommendations are under consideration.
      (3) The study considered a range of renewable energy projects that could harness solar energy, including solar photovoltaic, concentrated solar thermal and associated storage systems such as lithium batteries and hydrogen.
