Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 554 asked in the Legislative Council on 14 August 2018 by Hon Donna Faragher

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

MOORA RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE — CLOSURE
      554. Hon DONNA FARAGHER to the Minister for Education and Training:
In light of the Minister for Regional Development's decision last week to reverse her funding cut to community resource centres after listening to regional community concerns, will the minister now reverse her remaining education cuts, including the closure of Moora Residential College; and, if not, why not?
Hon SUE ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for the question.
The decision in respect of Moora Residential College stands. I made some public comments yesterday that the honourable member perhaps did not catch, because there was a lot of other news yesterday. I made some comments yesterday about this issue when I was asked publicly about it. There is a difference between the budget repair decision made in respect of Moora Residential College and the decision made as a consequence of the review into the community resource centres. CRCs are spread throughout the state and service the entire state. Moora Residential College services a very small number of students and is in a region where there are another three residential colleges and, indeed, there are other residential colleges across Western Australia. It is comparing apples and oranges to say —
Several members interjected.
Hon SUE ELLERY: I am providing the answer to the question. Members opposite may not agree with it, but I am providing the answer.
It is comparing apples and oranges to compare the two different budget repair decisions.
