Parliamentary Questions

Question On Notice No. 1086 asked in the Legislative Council on 27 October 2022 by Hon Dr Brad Pettitt

Question Directed to the: Minister for Agriculture and Food representing the Minister for Housing; Lands; Homelessness; Local Government
Parliament: 41 Session: 1

Question

I refer to the public housing waitlist and the tables 'Applicants Waiting for Housing (by oldest list date)' that used to be published regularly in 2015 and earlier, and I ask, could you please provide a table showing the list date of the next applicant in line to be offered a home from the department, by preferred living area and property type and broken down by region?

Answered on 14 February 2023

The table the Honourable Member is referring to was last published a significant number of years ago and preference zones have changed significantly.

Applicants beyond the average wait time are generally outliers that are housed while remaining eligible for public housing. Factors affecting longer wait times of individual applicants reflect individual circumstances, housing preferences and are not the experience of the wider population on the waitlist.

Many of these applicants are not actively seeking public housing at this time but remain eligible and may have a particular vulnerability.

Where such factors affect an applicant and they do not accept a property, the property will be offered to the next eligible applicant.
