Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 940 asked in the Legislative Council on 5 December 2017 by Hon Peter Collier

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

MOTOR VEHICLE RENEWAL NOTICES — AUTO MASTERS
      940. Hon PETER COLLIER to the minister representing the Minister for Transport:
      (1) Why is an advertisement for a private company, Auto Masters, being included in the same envelope as motor vehicle renewal notices?
      (2) Given that the bar code on the Auto Masters advertisement is identical in sequence to that on the renewal notice, what personal information does this private company have of car owners?
      (3) Is the posting of motor vehicle renewals completed by the Department of Transport or outsourced to a private company; and, if it is outsourced, to which company?
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable Leader of the Opposition for some notice of the question.
      (1) As the honourable member should be aware, in 2013 the previous Liberal–National government, of which he was a senior minister, entered into a contract with a third party to provide advertising inserts within the outgoing mail of the Department of Transport. Given the current financial position left by the previous Liberal–National government, the state government is not currently in a position to consider discontinuing this contract.
(2) No personal information is disclosed to the provider of advertisements.
      (3) The DOT has a contract with Fuji Xerox Australia Pty Ltd, which undertakes the posting of motor vehicle renewal notices with the advertising inserts at no additional cost.
