CORONAVIRUS — RESIDENTIAL TENANCIES

735. Hon TIM CLIFFORD to the minister representing the Minister for Commerce:

I refer to the hardship relief and support provided to residential tenants in response to the impacts of COVID-19.

(1) How many applications have been made to access the residential rent relief grant scheme?

(a) Of these, how many were approved?

(b) What is the total amount of the scheme accessed to date?

(2) How many applications have been made to the residential tenancies mandatory conciliation service?

(a) Of the accepted applications, how many resulted in agreement?

(b) Of the accepted applications, how many resulted in no agreement?

(c) How many agreements resulted in rent being reduced?

(d) How many agreements resulted in rent being deferred?

Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:

I thank the member for the question. The Minister for Commerce has provided the following information.

(1) As of 11 August 2020, 5 525 applications have been made.

(a) There have been 2 879 applications approved to date.

(b) The Treasurer will provide an update on the total amount of grants paid to residential landlords in the September sitting of Parliament.

(2) As of 11 August 2020, 760 applications have been made and 221 conciliations completed.

(a) Sixty-eight per cent of conciliations completed have resulted in agreement.

(b) Thirty-two per cent of conciliations completed have resulted in no agreement.

(c) An analysis of the first 50 orders finalised in the mandatory conciliation service established that a proportion of rent was reduced or waived in 20 per cent of the conciliations.

(d) An analysis of the first 50 orders finalised in the mandatory conciliation service established that a proportion of rent was deferred in 87 per cent of the conciliations.
