Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 1064 asked in the Legislative Council on 13 October 2020 by Hon Jacqui Boydell

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

SECURITY INDUSTRY — REGULATION

1064. Hon JACQUI BOYDELL to the minister representing the Minister for Police:

I ask this question on behalf of Hon Martin Aldridge, who is absent due to urgent parliamentary business.

Given the role of the security industry during COVID hotel quarantines, I refer to the fifth report of the Community Development and Justice Standing Committee, ''No Time for Complacency: Final Report for the Inquiry into the Protection of Crowded Places in Western Australia from Terrorist Attacks'' tabled in March 2019 and recommendation 18.

(1) Has the minister reviewed the regulation of the Western Australian security industry?

(2) Were alternative regulation models considered?

(3) Has any investigation and enforcement model been done to increase compliance of the security industry?

(4) If no to any of (1)–(3), why not?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank Hon Martin Aldridge for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by the Minister for Police.

(1)–(4) The Western Australia Police Force advises that the training and qualification standards for the security industry are set by the commonwealth and administered by each state and territory. The Western Australia Police Force actively enforces the licensing requirements of the Security and Related Activities (Control) Act 1996, conducts routine compliance checks and responds to concerns raised by industry or the public.
