Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 374 asked in the Legislative Assembly on 27 May 2020 by Mr Z.R.F. Kirkup

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CORONAVIRUS — AL KUWAIT

374. Mr Z.R.F. KIRKUP to the Minister for Health:

I have a supplementary question. Thank you very much, minister, for the response. Will the minister give an undertaking to table the communications protocols that he has outlined and commit to undertake an independent review to identify any shortcomings and potential improvements that can be made to protect the Western Australian community and help in our recovery?

Mr R.H. COOK replied:

Obviously, we learn from every occasion of COVID-19. At least half a dozen agencies are involved in this line of inquiry that will be looking at those protocols. Any serious concerns about a biosecurity risk are usually conveyed by way of a phone call, which on this particular occasion did not take place. I do not make any judgement on that. As the member would be aware, an email was sent to a member of the department using a generic but incorrect email address, so that person never received the email. We will continue to learn from this. That is the important thing that we will do. Every time there is an opportunity to do so after any incident, we will move forward and continue to learn from the issues that come along. Obviously, the Commissioner of Police and the Chief Health Officer will look very closely at this particular incident and make sure that we learn anything we can from it.
