CORONAVIRUS — VACCINATIONS — TARGET
611. Ms M.J. DAVIES to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question.
What other targets have been set for the Vaccine Commander to meet, where are
these targets published, and what happens if he is unable to meet the targets?
The SPEAKER: I just point out
to the Leader of the Opposition that it is one question for a supplementary,
not several questions.
Mr M.
McGOWAN replied:
As I explained to the Leader of the
Opposition, Commissioner Dawson is doing a fantastic job. I have a lot of faith
in him. He is trying to get as many people
vaccinated as possible, as quickly as possible. As I said to the Leader of
the Opposition earlier, we expect to get to 80 per cent of the over-12
population during December. That is what we expect. The consequence of failing
to meet that target will obviously be that it will push out the time frames for
reopening our borders to New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT. That will be
the ultimate consequence. We expect we will get there, and all our projections
are heading in the right direction.
The
good thing is, we have done a range of innovative things. Firstly, we have
mandated vaccinations for large parts of the workforce. That causes a lot
of angst for some people, but I urge people to just do the right thing. We have
vaccines rolling out all the time for people throughout their lives, and this
is no different for those people who are objecting or protesting. It is no
different from what happens currently in schools, particularly with girls.
Secondly, we are putting vaccination
clinics in place all over Western Australia—about 100 around the state,
in all sorts of communities. The Brunswick Show is coming up shortly, and there
will be a vaccination clinic at the show, in the member for Murray–Wellington's
electorate.
Ms M.J. Davies interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN: Well, the
Brunswick Show is still coming.
There will also be vaccination
clinics in the member for Armadale's electorate, at the shopping
centre, and in the member for Mirrabooka's electorate, also at the
shopping centre and at the Herb Graham Recreation Centre. We are looking at other
innovative places to locate them, which we will no doubt announce in due
course.
We are also going to announce
further mandating across workforces to get people vaccinated. These are tough
things to do, but serious times call for serious measures, and that is what we
are going to do. I just urge the Liberals and Nationals: if Nick Goiran is
going to continue going out there and opposing vaccination, he should not be in
this Parliament.
Several members interjected.
Point of Order
Dr D.J.
HONEY: I have a point of order.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER: Members! Member for Southern River, as a previous Acting
Speaker, you would know that interjecting when a point of order is being taken
is highly disorderly. I ask you not to do that again.
Dr D.J. HONEY: The Premier
has several times not used the honourable member's correct title in his
presentation.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER: Members! It is
not a matter for debate. Members of the other house, regardless of what party
they are from or what their views are, are named by their correct title. That
is the only acceptable thing.
Questions without Notice Resumed
Mr M. McGOWAN: Hon Nick
Goiran is not supporting our efforts to get people vaccinated. The bloke who
runs the Liberal Party in Western Australia, as we have learnt, is actually not
supporting vaccination. That is an issue.
Dr D.J. Honey: That's
not true.
Mr M. McGOWAN: The member
for Cottesloe, who I suspect will never be described as ''the honourable'',
is someone who refuses to take on Hon Nick Goiran, because Nick Goiran, the
honourable, runs the Liberal Party in Western Australia!
