PRISONS —
CORRUPTION AND MISCONDUCT
927. Mr
S.K. L'ESTRANGE to the Minister for Corrective Services:
I refer to the Corruption and Crime
Commission's current public examinations into how culture contributes
to serious misconduct in Hakea and other prisons in Western Australia.
Given
the minister was warned of corruption concerns in the CCC's ''Report
into Misconduct Risks in WA Prisons'' in 2018, why are we still
reading about corruption and misconduct concerns in the prison system after
four years of the McGowan Labor government?
Mr F.M.
LOGAN replied:
I thank the member for raising this
issue. It is a very important issue. As the member would remember, the matters
that were raised by the Corruption and Crime Commission's reports—there
were a number of them—related primarily to actions that occurred under
the previous Liberal–National government. Most of the recommendations
from those reports, which the CCC itself has already reported on, have been
implemented. We were congratulated, as a government and a department, for
moving so quickly on those recommendations. Regarding the current investigation that has been undertaken by the CCC,
if the member goes to the CCC's website and reads the four-page
document that relates to the investigation, it is about an incident that
occurred in 2018 at Hakea Prison. It does not go back to the issues that the
CCC had reported on, which the member is trying allude to. It relates to a particular
incident that occurred in 2018. I am not going to make any comment whatsoever
about that incident because it is under investigation, as it should be. I look
forward to reading the report.
