Question Without Notice No. 822 asked in the Legislative Council on 20 August 2020 by Hon Peter Collier

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

STEPHEN KALESS

822. Hon PETER COLLIER to the minister representing the Treasurer:

(1) On what date did the Treasurer first become aware of the incident involving his former staff member, Stephen Kaless, at a staff Christmas party in December 2019?

(2) On what date did the December 2019 incident occur and who notified the Treasurer of the incident?

(3) On what date did he first become aware of a separate incident involving Stephen Kaless in 2017, for which Mr Kaless was counselled?

(4) On what date did the 2017 incident occur and who notified him of the incident?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by the Treasurer.

(1)–(2) On the evening of 13 December 2019, my chief of staff made me aware of an allegation made against Mr Kaless earlier that day. The matter was referred to the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, as it should be, and was subsequently the subject of criminal proceedings in which Mr Kaless was acquitted.

(3)–(4) My knowledge of this matter is generally limited to media coverage in December 2019.
