ANIMAL ACTIVISM — RESTAURANT DISTURBANCE

799. Hon COLIN de GRUSSA to the minister representing the Minister for Police:

I refer to the incident involving animal activists harassing and intimidating patrons and staff at a restaurant in Subiaco on Sunday evening.

(1) Did police attend this incident; and, if so, please provide details?

(2) Was this incident in breach of any COVID-19 regulations; and, if so, please provide details?

(3) Were any activists present in breach of any court orders or bail conditions?

(4) Were any charges or move-on notices issued in response to the incident?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. The following answer has been provided to me by the Minister for Police.

The Western Australia Police Force advises the following.

(1) Yes. About 8.00 pm, Sunday, 16 August 2020, the Western Australia Police Force responded to a reported disturbance at the Lapa Brazilian Barbecue restaurant, situated at 375 Hay Street, Subiaco. This incident involved approximately 10 animal protesters, who left after being requested to do so by the restaurant owner. The protesters had departed prior to the arrival of police.

(2) No.

(3) Police are continuing to make inquiries into this reported matter and are unable to confirm details at this point in time.

(4) The protesters had departed the restaurant prior to police arrival, and inquiries into whether any offences have been committed are ongoing.
