Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 1114 asked in the Legislative Council on 15 November 2022 by Hon Sophia Moermond

Parliament: 41 Session: 1

REDCYCLE — SOFT PLASTIC RECYCLING

1114. Hon SOPHIA MOERMOND to the minister representing the Minister for Environment:

I refer to the recent collapse of soft plastic recycling in Australia through REDcycle.

(1) Does the collapse of REDcycle jeopardise the targets set in this government's Waste avoidance and resource recovery strategy 2030?

(2) Is the Waste Authority proving local governments and the community with information on how to correctly dispose of soft plastics?

(3) Would the minister consider allocating a portion of the $62.25 million collected through the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Act that is not allocated to waste projects to tackle this mounting problem?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The honourable member said ''proving'' in her second question; I saw it as ''providing'' and providing made sense, so I have answered it as though the question said providing.

(1) No.

(2) The Waste Authority's WasteSorted: Be a GREAT Sort communication programs will continue to provide information to support households with their waste management.

(3) A soft plastics industry task force is being established nationally to identify options to help manage collection, storage and processing. It is appropriate that industry contributes to the cost of managing its products.
