CORRUPTION AND CRIME COMMISSIONER —
REAPPOINTMENT — OPERATIONAL ACTIVITIES
1332. Hon MICHAEL MISCHIN
to the Leader of the House representing the Attorney General:
Gosh! I feel much more reassured having Dear Leader tell me
over the radio how it is.
The PRESIDENT: Member, you might want to ask your
question without preamble.
Hon MICHAEL MISCHIN: Given that the government has
chosen to leave vacant, since 28 April this year, the position of Corruption and Crime Commissioner because it could not get
its way in appointing its preferred candidate, I ask the following
questions.
(1) To what extent has the lack of a full-time
commissioner significantly disrupted or compromised operational
activities?
(2) Could the Attorney General provide evidence to support
those assertions?
(3) Has the
Attorney General, since April, asked for or received any further reports from
the commission of ongoing or emerging investigations?
(4) If so, when, and for what purpose?
Hon SUE ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1)–(4)
The government has not chosen to leave this position vacant. The government
continues to support the candidate, Hon John McKechnie, QC, put forward by the
nominating committee that was chaired by the Chief Justice of Western Australia
and has —
Hon Michael Mischin interjected.
The PRESIDENT: Order! The minister has been asked a question.
The minister is trying to reply to the question. If you would like to hear the
answer, let her continue.
Hon SUE ELLERY: Thanks, Madam President.
It has been blocked in its attempts to reappoint him.
The PRESIDENT: Hon Donna Faragher.
Several members interjected.
The PRESIDENT: Hon Donna Faragher, would you like to
ask a question?
Hon Donna Faragher: I would, thank you.
The PRESIDENT: I know. I thought you would.
