Question Without Notice No. 887 asked in the Legislative Council on 12 October 2022 by Hon Dr Brad Pettitt

Parliament: 41 Session: 1

BANKSIA HILL DETENTION CENTRE — UNIT 18 DETAINEES — OFFENCES

887. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Corrective Services:

I refer to youth detainees currently at Banksia Hill Detention Centre and unit 18 of Casuarina Prison.

(1) Could the minister please provide a breakdown of the principal charges and offences that have led youth detainees into custody?

(2) Could the minister please provide a breakdown of current youth detainees at Banksia Hill Detention Centre and unit 18 respectively, by principal charge and offence in (1) for which they are currently facing or currently serving a sentence?

Hon MATTHEW SWINBOURN replied:

I thank the member for some notice of the question. The following answer is based on information provided to me by the Minister for Corrective Services. The answer to question (1) is largely in tabular form so I seek leave to have the response incorporated into Hansard.

[Leave granted for the following material to be incorporated.]

Note:

Where the "Stays Commenced" is listed as less than 5, this is to ensure that there is no risk of identifying a detainee. Where the offence type is listed as 'Inadequate or Unavailable Data' this will generally be cases where the young person was received under arrest and the offence data is not recorded, or where the young person has become sentenced, but the sentencing information has not been finalised.

(2) Because of the small cohort of detainees at unit 18, this information is not able to be provided without risk of identifying individuals.
