Question
I refer to ‘term of government’ termination
payments to ministerial staff following the State election, and I ask:
(a) for each ministerial office where a payment was
relevant, please provide the name of the staff member, their position and the payment
amount; and
(b) what is the total amount of term of government termination
payments to date?
Answered on 2 June 2021
a) See tabled paper.
Ministerial staff are employed by way of term of government contracts under section 68 of the Public Sector Management Act 1994. On termination of employment, term of government employees are entitled to four weeks salary in addition to two weeks salary for each year of continuous service and any accrued leave entitlements.
This is consistent with what occurred under the previous Liberal National Government.
Following the 2017 election, termination payments to ministerial staff of the previous Liberal National government totalled more than $5.6 million. This is also included in the answer.
This included a payment of $288,100 to Mia Davies’ former Chief of Staff, as well as to former Minister Bill Marmion’s Chief of Staff, who was later employed as Chief of Staff to the former Leader of the Opposition whose payments combined totalled $309,656.
NB. Multiple ministerial staff listed were employed in the Leader of the Opposition’s office in the previous government.
(b) $2,297,414.53
