Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 1197 asked in the Legislative Council on 3 November 2020 by Hon Tim Clifford

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS — LNG SECTOR

1197. Hon TIM CLIFFORD to the minister representing the Minister for Energy:

My question without notice —

The PRESIDENT: Order, members! I cannot hear Hon Tim Clifford's question.

Hon TIM CLIFFORD: It is a great question.

The PRESIDENT: I am sure it is.

Hon TIM CLIFFORD: I note that WA's biggest LNG importers, Japan, China and South Korea, which represent 87 per cent of the Western Australian LNG export market in 2019, have each committed to a target of net zero emissions by 2050. Given this further increases the likelihood of WA's LNG assets becoming stranded assets, will the McGowan government reconsider its refusal to legislate a state-based net zero emissions target?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following information has been provided to me by the Minister for Energy.

The Western Australian government remains committed to our policy on net zero emissions by 2050.
