Parliamentary Questions

Question On Notice No. 1002 asked in the Legislative Council on 11 October 2022 by Hon Dr Brad Pettitt

Question Directed to the: Minister for Emergency Services representing the Minister for Environment
Parliament: 41 Session: 1

Question

I refer to question 783 asked on 9 August 2022, and I ask:
(a) considering that the Perth Air Quality Management Plan (2000) (AQMP) was reviewed in 2007 and that review recommended revisions and updates, why haven’t these revisions and updates been incorporated into the AQMP;
(b) what deadline has the Minister set for updating this 22-year-old AQMP;
(c) on what dates were the five most recent meetings of the Air Quality Coordinating Committee (AQCC) held;
(d) when is the next scheduled meeting of the AQCC;
(e) does the AQCC meet regularly:
(i) if yes, how often; and
(ii) if no, why not; and
(f) is the delay in updating the Perth Air Quality Management Plan related to the increasing frequency of prescribed burning of the jarrah forest, which is causing increased exceedances of national air quality guidelines in the Metropolitan Area?

Answered on 15 November 2022

(a)   – (b)    The Perth AQMP continues to provide a responsive management framework for managing contemporary air quality issues. Revision to the Plan are currently being considered and are intended to be completed by mid-2023.

(c)   22 April 2022, 27 August 2021, 11 December 2020, 27 August 2020 and 29 May 2020.

(d)   7 December 2022.

(e)   Yes, the AQCC aims to meet at least twice per year.

(f)   No. Perth air quality is good compared to other major cities within Australia and around the world.  The latest WA air monitoring report was published on the Department’s website in October 2022.
