Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 1247 asked in the Legislative Council on 24 November 2022 by Hon Sophia Moermond

Parliament: 41 Session: 1

ABORIGINAL ARTS AND CULTURE — GRANTS

1247. Hon SOPHIA MOERMOND to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Culture and the Arts:

I refer to a new funding program aimed at Aboriginal arts organisations to support business development, tourism opportunities and social cohesion in regional and remote WA.

(1) Given that the short window for funding is open now, has the minister's department been liaising with organisations in the sector prior to the announcement of these grants?

(2) How much of the $20 million regional arts and cultural investment program, from which these grants are funded, will be allocated to regional and remote Aboriginal arts organisations?

(3) How many rounds a year will be offered by this fund?

(4) Will this new program be a permanent funding pool for Aboriginal arts organisations going forward?

Hon SAMANTHA ROWE replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question and provide the following answer on behalf of the Minister for Culture and the Arts.

(1) Yes. The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries has been liaising with organisations prior to the announcement of the grant round opening to advise of the program being available. It was also discussed at the recent Aboriginal Art Centre Hub Western Australia forum in Geraldton in October, which regional and remote Aboriginal arts and cultural organisations attended.

(2) Approximately $2.9 million has been allocated to date from July 2019. A list has been provided in tabular form and I seek leave to have the information incorporated into Hansard.
