Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 789 asked in the Legislative Council on 13 October 2021 by Hon Dr Brad Pettitt

Parliament: 41 Session: 1

PRISONERS — RELEASED — ACCOMMODATION

789. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the minister representing the Minister for Corrective Services:

How many people have been released from Western Australian prisons this year without secured accommodation?

Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:

I thank the member for the question. The following information has been provided by the Minister for Corrective Services.

The Department of Justice does not keep statistics regarding accommodation for released prisoners. Prisoners released from prison to freedom have no requirement to provide a residential address as they are no longer subject to a legal order. When under consideration by the Prisoners Review Board for release to parole, prisoners are assisted by the Department of Justice's adult community corrections in preparing a parole plan, which includes suitable accommodation. The requirement for a prisoner to have suitable accommodation upon release is a primary consideration of the Prisoners Review Board in determining suitability for release to parole. If a prisoner released from prison on community supervision is homeless, adult community corrections will provide information about temporary emergency accommodation options and assist with applications where necessary.
