Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 749 asked in the Legislative Council on 12 August 2020 by Hon Nick Goiran

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CORONAVIRUS — RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL TENANCIES

749. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the minister representing the Minister for Commerce:

I refer to the parliamentary debate on the Residential Tenancies (COVID-19 Response) Bill 2020 and the Commercial Tenancies (COVID-19 Response) Bill 2020 and the statements that the government did not intend to extend the emergency period for the legislation beyond the current sunset date of 29 September 2020.

(1) Has the McGowan government shifted from this position?

(2) If yes to (1), will the minister table the documents that form the basis upon which this shifted position has been established?

(3) If no to (1), is the matter currently under active consideration?

(4) If yes to (3), what are the criteria being used to determine whether any extension will be made to the emergency period?

Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:

I thank the member for the question. The following information has been provided by the Minister for Commerce.

(1)–(4) At the time the bills were passed, the WA Parliament made provision to allow for the extension of the emergency period. The government is monitoring the situation in relation to whether the emergency period should be extended. A range of factors including, but not limited to, the commonwealth government's approach to income support, the current predicted economic conditions, the degree to which existing interventions have been effective and the need for an orderly transition from the current provisions will be taken into consideration.
