Question Directed to the: Minister for Environment representing the Minister for Police
Parliament: 40 Session: 1
Question
I
refer to Legislative Council question with notice 835, regarding Mr Leroy Dimer
who was convicted of assaulting a public officer, to which an adequate answer
was not provided, and I ask:
(a) has
the Minister discussed the matter with the Western Australia Police Force and the Western Australia Police
Union as the Minister publicly committed;
(b) if
yes to (a), on what date or dates did such a conversation(s) occur; and
(c) is
the Government considering amendments to provide greater protection to
frontline officers who are assaulted in these circumstances?
Answered on 20 October 2020
(a)–(c) As the Honourable Member is aware the Criminal Code Amendment (COVID-19 Response) Act 2020 amended the Criminal Code and included a section which states “For the period of 12 months beginning on the day on which the Criminal Code Amendment (COVID-19 Response) Act 2020 section 4(1) comes into operation, subsection (1) applies as if amended by inserting after paragraph (l)”. Police are aware of the need to review the Act’s operation and effectiveness, and provide advice to government regarding the continuation and any amendment of the Act. In providing advice to Government, the Minister anticipates that consideration will be given to all charges and court outcomes.
