Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 824 asked in the Legislative Council on 20 August 2020 by Hon Peter Collier

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR — PERTH

824. Hon PETER COLLIER to the minister representing the Minister for Police:

I ask this question on behalf of Hon Jim Chown, who is away on urgent parliamentary business.

(1) How many Criminal Code infringement notices were issued within the City of Perth's local government boundary for the years —

(a) 2017;

(b) 2018;

(c) 2019; and

(d) 2020 to date?

(2) How many incidents of antisocial behaviour have been reported within the City of Perth's local government boundary for the years —

(a) 2017;

(b) 2018;

(c) 2019; and

(d) 2020 to date?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by the Minister for Police.

The Western Australia Police Force advises the following.

(1) (a) There were 1 571 in 2017;

(b) there were 1 301 in 2018;

(c) there were 1 107 in 2019; and

(d) there have been 635 in 2020.

(2) (a) There were 404 in 2017;

(b) there were 378 in 2018;

(c) there were 434 in 2019; and

(d) there have been 219 in 2020.

In addition to Operation Heat Shield, which saw an unprecedented additional $5 million in funding to boost police operations in Perth and elsewhere, there has been a recent boost to officer numbers as part of Operation Nightsafe. WA police also advise that the increased high-visibility police presence has resulted in positive feedback and greater reporting of offences, which often previously went unreported.
