BANKSIA HILL DETENTION CENTRE — UNIT 18 STAFF

982. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Corrective Services:

(1) How many Banksia Hill Detention Centre and/or unit 18 staff members are currently under investigation for excessive use of force?

(2) How many complaints of excessive use of force by Banksia Hill or unit 18 staff have been investigated by the Department of Justice in the past year?

(3) How many of the complaints referred to in (2) were sustained?

Hon MATTHEW SWINBOURN replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. I provide the following answer based on information provided by the Minister for Corrective Services. The answer is based on physical contact data for Banksia Hill and unit 18 for 30 September 2021 to 30 September 2022.

(1) Ten staff are currently under investigation.

(2) There were 46 complaints investigated and 15 of those matters are under investigation, with five carried over before 30 September 2021.

(3) Two of the complaints that have been completed in the past 12 months have been sustained.
