Question Without Notice No. 594 asked in the Legislative Council on 1 September 2021 by Hon Sophia Moermond

Parliament: 41 Session: 1

CORONAVIRUS — LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH STATISTICS

594. Hon SOPHIA MOERMOND to the minister representing the Minister for Health:

I refer to the Australian Bureau of Statistics report on leading causes of death in Australia. What international classification of diseases code is being applied to deaths associated with SARS and COVID-19?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by the Minister for Health.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics report on leading causes of death in Australia is compiled using cause-of-death data supplied from Births, Deaths and Marriages registers within each state. The ABS report does not contain any data from the Western Australian Department of Health.

The following ICD-10 codes may be applied to deaths associated with COVID and SARS: U07.1, COVID-19, virus identified; U07.2, COVID-19, virus not identified; U09.9, post-COVID-19 condition; U10.9, multisystem inflammatory syndrome associated with COVID-19; and U04.9, severe acute respiratory syndrome.
