Question

(1) For crimes committed in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 to date, how many involved the use of a registered gun(s)?
(2) For crimes committed in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 to date, how many involved the use of an unregistered gun(s)?

Answered on 11 October 2022

(1 – 2)  The Western Australia Police Force does not distinguish between crimes involving registered and unregistered firearms. The Western Australia Police Force can provide a record of crimes incidents where the modus operandi is ‘firearm’.

  2. Figures are of crime incidents recorded in the Western Australia Police Force’s Incident Management System where the incident occurred between 01 January 2019 and 11 September 2022 (inclusive) and where the modus operandi is ‘firearm’.
  3. Identifying a firearm incident is reliant on the recording practices of officers, this includes the selection of the correct modus operandi and firearm type. In cases where the firearm type is recorded as ‘Ammunition’ or ‘None’, it has been excluded. Information contained in free text fields is not considered.
