Parliamentary Questions

Question On Notice No. 1090 asked in the Legislative Council on 27 October 2022 by Hon Dr Brad Pettitt

Question Directed to the: Parliamentary Secretary representing the Minister for Corrective Services
Parliament: 41 Session: 1

Question

I refer to youth detention, and I ask:
(a) what hours are legal services able to access clients face-to-face at Unit 18 and Banksia Hill Detention Centre respectively;
(b) is it true that legal services are only able to access the young people in Unit 18 during official visiting hours 8:30am-9:30am, which is also the only time that families can visit these children; and
(c) are legal services able to speak with clients in a private room at Unit 18?

Answered on 29 November 2022

a)  Legal Services are able to access in person official visit times at:

·  Unit 18 – Monday to Friday from 08:45am to 09:45am

·  Banksia Hill Detention Centre – Monday to Friday from 09:00am to 4:00pm

b) No

c) Yes. Legal Services can speak with young people at Unit 18 by phone or e-visits which are facilitated in a separate room. If in-person visits are required, Legal Services can use the non-contact visit rooms.

The length of legal visits has been raised.

 For visits that require more than the available 1 hour at Unit 18, they can and are being facilitated at Banksia Hill through the young person being escorted to Banksia Hill for the purpose of the visit.
