Frequently asked questions

How are new works acquired for Parliament House?

Parliament House acquires artworks that enrich or expand the range or representation of the collection or strengthen the historical collection. Some of the artworks are jointly funded by the three parliamentary departments and others are gifted or loaned to the Parliament.

The Parliament House Art Advisory Committee will not acquire, or accept a loan of, any object unless it is satisfied with the validity of ownership of the object.

In assessing the suitability of artworks for the collection, consideration is given to a range of factors including its relevance to Parliament, members and staff and whether it depicts Western Australian landmarks and physical features or has a local or Aboriginal reference. Further, the artwork is reviewed in the context of its artistic or presentation merit. This includes consideration of the artist’s professional record, visual appropriateness and professional presentation, vulnerability to damage, size in the context of capacity to display, resources required to house and maintain the artwork and any safety issues it may present for visitors.

How does Parliament preserve the collection?

Acquisitions and loans are clearly documented to facilitate identification, provenance and research. The collection is assessed at regular intervals with regard to value and ongoing preservation.

Can I copy or use an image of an artwork?

Third party rights exist in many of the images featured in the art catalogue and on display in the Parliament of Western Australia. It is therefore important that you seek advice on the copyright that applies to any image you wish to use.
