Plan your visit

There are a number of ways for Western Australians and tourists to visit Parliament including taking tours of Parliament House, watching debates and viewing evidence hearings in committees. The following information provides guidance on how to get to Parliament House, parking, security requirements and facilities.

Hours of operation

Opening hours vary due to the parliamentary sitting calendar. On sitting days the house is open from 8:00 am until the last house rises. On non-sitting days the house is open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The committee offices are open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Parliament and the committee offices are closed on weekends and public holidays.

Finding Parliament

Parliament House is located at 4 Harvest Terrace, West Perth WA 6005. The building and its grounds are bound by Hay Street, the Mitchell Freeway, Malcolm Street and Harvest Terrace.

 

Walking to Parliament House

Parliament is located on the outskirts of the city centre, though still in the central business district. The most direct route is to walk west along St Georges Terrace or west along Hay Street. It takes approximately fifteen minutes to walk the two kilometres from the city centre.

Parking at Parliament House

Limited visitor parking is available and can be accessed via the southern driveway from Harvest Terrace. One-hour metered parking is available in Parliament Place.

Public transport

The free CAT bus service is available to and from Parliament. The Red CAT travels to Parliament House along Hay Street and the Green CAT travels along St Georges Terrace to Malcolm Street.

Returning buses can be accessed from Murray Street for the Red CAT bus and Malcolm Street for the Green CAT bus.

Private bus transport

There are two bus layover bays adjacent to Parliament House at the southern end of Harvest Terrace. Additional layover bays are available at the Constitutional Centre on the corner of Havelock St and Parliament Place (350 metres from Parliament House). Bus parking is available in Kings Park.

Groups with special access requirements should contact Parliament House on 9222 7222 or, for educational tour groups, the Parliamentary Education Office on 9222 7259 ahead of their visit to discuss arrangements.

Security

To ensure Parliament remains safe and accessible to visitors and building occupants, Parliament has implemented a range of security procedures.

CCTV cameras, alarms and other security measures are in place within the parliamentary precinct and its annexe buildings.

Conditions of entry

  • Large backpacks or bags may not be brought into Parliament House (small handbags or medical equipment are allowed)
  • No food or drink is to be brought into Parliament House
  • You are required to undergo security screening
  • Prohibited items* must be surrendered to security
  • You must comply with the dress standard
  • You must clearly display your security access card at all times while in the building
  • You must be accompanied at all times by the person who is hosting your visit

*examples of prohibited items include sharp items (knives, scissors, cutlery, screwdrivers); spray paint; items that make a noise (whistles); banners; placards; flags; and liquids.

With the exception of special needs students, schools are requested not to bring workbooks, pens or pencils on educational tours as these can interfere with the presentation and student learning.

Conditions of entry to chamber gallery

While we encourage you to watch the proceedings in either chamber of Parliament:

  • You must not disrupt proceedings in the chamber or gallery
  • You must comply with a direction made by the President or Speaker, or Usher of the Black Rod or Sergeant-at-Arms on behalf of the President or Speaker
  • You must comply with a direction from security personnel
  • You must not wear clothing displaying offensive or political slogans.

Dress Standard

Parliament House is a working building and an appropriate dress standard should be observed with smart and neat attire.

Photography and filming

Photography and filming is permitted outside Parliament House, including on the front steps.

Photography and filming is restricted within Parliament House. Your host or tour guide will advise where photography is permitted.

Photography is not permitted in the public galleries.

Guide Dogs and assistance animals

Guide dogs and assistance animals are welcome at Parliament House. Please ensure you have your animal’s accreditation card to present to staff on entry.

Facilities

Parliament offers a variety of facilities for visitors:

  • An external wheelchair access ramp and internal lifts to the first and second floor
  • A Universal Access Toilet (first floor Lee Steere foyer south)
  • Toilets and baby-changing facilities (ground floor quiet room and first floor members’ corridor)
  • Water fountains
  • Gifts – Parliament has a variety of affordable Legislative Council and general parliamentary gifts and Parliament House publications for purchase

Please note that there is no public cafe facility at Parliament House.
