Origin of the Name:
Cockburn Sound was named by Captain James Stirling in March 1827, after Admiral Sir George Cockburn, born in London, 22 April 1772, and who died at Learmington, England, on 19 August 1853. He served in the British military operation of Martinique in 1809, assisted at the capture of Washington 1814, and took Napoleon to Saint Helena after the Battle of Waterloo.
